Amazon

When you’ve been doing SEO and Internet Marketing as long as I have, you get used to seeing trends come and go.

The one thing that is always consistent about this space is change. And it changes rapidly.

With the rise and dominance of Google as “the go to” search engine, no one expected a competitor to rise up and a familiar one at that: Amazon. “Wait, but Amazon isn’t a search engine.” While that is technically true, the basis of the issue is who controls the vehicle which leads to online sales?  That ownership used to belong to Google…

It now belongs to Amazon

According to tests that we performed, the same ranking for the same product in Google, sending the traffic to an eCommerce site, produced, on average, 12-15 sales per day. However, that same product, with the same ranking, but inside of Amazon, and going to a Fulfilled by Amazon (FBA) listing with Amazon Prime, produced 150-225 sales per day. That is more than a 10x difference.

This is not just about conversion, this is about who is controlling the “buying behavior” on the Internet today. And Amazon controls it. When people want information, they turn to Google. When they want to BUY something, they turn to Amazon. Look at your own buying behavior, and you know that is exactly what is going on. Some top keyword get 10x more searches on Amazon than they to in Google.
